GUIDANCE:
The professional counseling staff at Prattville High School provides two main areas of service to students and advisors. Guidance is provided to students in the areas of curriculum selection and information services including vocational, colleges, trades, testing, and scholarship information. Guidance is provided for advisors on request concerning curriculum requirements, conducting conferences, and any other of the areas already mentioned. Counselors solicit student referrals and advisors using forms and guidelines provided. Counselors will at all times keep their conferences with students confidential.

CUMULATIVE RECORDS:
A cumulative record on each student is kept in the guidance office to be used by the counselors and advisors for working the individual students. Each advisee’s record will be copied and placed in folders for advisor’s use. The confidential disclosure record should be signed by those viewing records. This record is located in the guidance office.

Parents of 9th Grade Students

It is very important to emphasize the importance of becoming a freshman and how it effects college and scholarship applications.  All grades and credits will be entered into the student’s transcript.  A transcript is document detailing a student’s academic achievement in high school.  A Prattville High School transcript includes the following information:

  1. Courses, grades, and credits for each grade completed beginning with the 9th grade
  2. Current GPA (the average of a student’s grades)
  3. College test scores (ACT/SAT/PSAT)
  4. Alabama Graduation Exam Results

Parents need to:

  1. Monitor Academic Progress

Prattville High School offers STI Home for parents to view grades and the progress their student is making toward his/her academic goals.  Progress reports go home every 9 weeks.  Parents do not assume your student is doing fine.  Schedule parent conferences, attend open houses, email teachers, and keep lines of communication open, to become informed.

  1. Encourage Involvement in a Variety of Activities

Colleges and universities will ask students about their high school activities.  Not only do they want to see involvement in activities but they want to see leadership responsibilities.  Community service activities add on college applications.

  1. Select Appropriate 10th courses
  2. Select Beneficial Summer Activities

Volunteer, have a summer job, take a youth mission trip, or visit college campuses. College campuses often offer high school students summer programs.
 5.  Start a College Savings Plan

Advising Your Sophomore Student for College

  1. Continue to Monitor Your Student’s Progress.  Check STI Home for progress and grade reports.  Remember PHS progress reports go home every 9 weeks.
  2. Continue to Encourage Involvement in community activities, school clubs and organizations. Run for an office and gain leadership experience.
  3. Take the PSAT

Students should take the PSAT (a national test offered at PHS during October).

  1. Discuss College Options

Talk to your student about their interest and abilities in terms of college majors.
Make informal visits to colleges. Great information is now available on the web.

  1. Help Plan Summer Enrichment Activities

Have your student consider taking the ACT/SAT the summer before their junior year. Check the PHS website for test dates.
Auburn University Montgomery offers ACT prep courses

  1. Update Resume

Create a resume listing all honors, awards and community service.

  1. Meet with Your Grade Level Counselor

Check credits, diploma type and graduation exam results.
       8.  Continue to Explore ways to Pay for College

11th Grade College Guide For Parents

  1. Continue to Monitor Academic Progress

Junior grades are considered the most important grades on a student’s transcript because they are the last grades a college will see when reviewing and considering scholarship applications.  Most college applications and scholarships committees have a December 1 deadline of a student’s senior year in high school.

  1. Encourage Involvement in Activities

Community service, church service, school clubs and organizations are a must for a competitive resume.
      3.   Register for the PSAT
PHS offers the PSAT in October.  The PSAT is a national test that contains five
Sections: two Critical Reading, two Maths, and one Writing.
4.  Explore College Options
Consider the following: Location, Campus Size, Majors,
Admission Requirements and Cost.
Schedule visits to tour the campus and meet with the admission counselors.

  1. Register for the ACT/SAT

All 4 year college and universities require an ACT or SAT score for admission.
Students should take the ACT/SAT by the spring of their junior year. Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org, and for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com. The PHS school code is 012-220.

  1. Update Student’s Resume
  2. Have copies of Reference Letters

Request letters of reference at least two weeks in advance and give a copy of updated resume to the person writing the letter of recommendation.
